Camelina Production
Camelina seed is a low cost, low input, and low risk crop. Since camelina seeds are small, seeding rates are recommended to be between 3 to 8 lbs/acre depending on conditions, equipment, and timing. In addition, camelina should be seeded by shallow or broadcast seeding methods. The production of camelina has several advantages over other oilseed crops.
- Camelina is a winter annual crop and can be seeded in either late fall or early spring
- Camelina crop is both saline tolerant, as well as, drought tolerant
- When seeded in the fall a camelina crop may not require any herbicides due to its strong competitiveness against weeds
- Fall seeding allows producers to harvest in mid July before other crops are ready
- Equipment and man power can be spread out over time with fall seeding
- Yields and low fertility are very similar to flax

Currently all the camelina seed used for processing is grown by the owners of Canpressco. This allows for 100% traceability of the camelina used in our facility. Canpressco will be looking at contracting farmers to grow camelina. All the camelina grown for Canpressco will use a total crop management system and be pesticide free. Soil nutrition analysis will be conducted using PRS© technology from Western Ag Labs.
