Camelina sativa is a GMO-free crop that is well-suited for Saskatchewan's growing environment. The production of camelina has several advantages over other oilseed crops:
- Camelina is a winter annual crop and can be seeded in either late fall or early spring. A late fall seeding will result in harvests before other crops are ready in mid-July.
- A camelina crop is saline and drough tolerant, as well as being strongly competitive against weeds.
- High yields and low fertility rates are similar to flax.
Currently, all the camelina seed used for processing is grown by the owners of Canpressco. This allows for 100% traceability of the camelina used in our facility. All the Canpressco-grown camelina has individually-tailored crop nutrition plans developed and is pesticide free. Soil nutrition analysis is conducted using PRS technology from Western Ag Labs.
